Class size – how class size affects AP classes
How many of us can look back and think that we might possibly not have reached our full potential in life? What if we’d done better in school? What if we had gone to a better college or university?
The predominant approach in our present-day public schools has created a culture wherein 16-year-olds are deciding they’re not likely to go to university or college. They believe that the material will be way too difficult. They suppose they do not have the required abilities. They lack confidence in their personal ability to learn and grow within an academic environment. They are not qualified to make the right choices!
Quite a bit has been said concerning the importance of small class size and individual attention in our schools. But small class size is just the beginning. The most effective high schools have not primarily smaller classes, which permit more personal attention–they employ highly skilled teachers who teach more challenging material.
AP courses, conceived by the College Board, have been around for fifty years. They are authorized college-level courses that are taught in high schools. Their reputation has increased over the decades, and they’ve come to be an essential part of the high school portfolio for anyone hoping to apply to a four year university or college. Many parents believe that these classes and their higher expectations put too much pressure on children, still in high school. But that’s not how it was intended to be.
If approached the correct way, these courses can in actuality be a very good opportunity. The down side is that the vast majority of high schools that provide these courses still pack 20 to 30 students into the class. So contrary to being a very good opportunity, most students simply struggle with the work. Alternatively, in cases where these classes are taught by expert teachers in smaller classes – classes with only eight to ten students per teacher, every last student receives the opportunity to be successful in a college level course.
A taste of this success is usually precisely what it takes to turn a student’s life around. Students at the best private high schools, such as Cambrian International Academy, have mentioned in many cases that the first class made them feel as if they could accomplish nearly anything. They take more of these classes in subsequent years, and then find themselves accepted to top universities in advanced standing. The AP credit transfers, and they start college as sophomores!
At this moment, 16-year-olds have far more reason to make an informed decision about college. Parents need to start by making the right choices in high school.
