Create the Perfect Home Atmosphere with Great Lighting

If you want to change your mood, change your lighting. Both light and color affect our moods and light affects color. You can change the feel of a room or a whole house by just changing the lighting.

Natural Light

During the day, natural light dominates the emotion of a room. If the natural light for a room comes in from the north, both the temperature and the mood will tend toward cool. Colors will be influenced toward their coolest  hue.  In the summer this is helpful in cooling tempers. In the winter this may accentuate depression. Knowing this, you may wish to add artificial lighting to the room that will help offset the negative influences and encourage the positive.

Windows and doors that face the other three directions, East, West, and South, invite warmer elements. Color influences during the day will move from yellow to orange to red to orange and back to yellow.  So, if your kitchen is yellow and faces east, you are in for a pretty bright yellow morning. On the other hand, if it is your bedroom that faces east you may not want to paint it yellow.

Artificial Light

When you choose artificial lighting, keep in mind that florescent lights now come in different varieties. The older fluorescents radiated a green/blue tint. As any woman can tell you, this is not the most flattering light. Warm colors tend to look dull and lifeless. There are now florescent lights that emit a shade that tends toward pink, a much more flattering option. Rooms lighted with these bulbs are more likely to feel warm and inviting.

Of course, halogen and incandescent bulbs are still in wide use. These tend to yellow the colors of a room, so if the room itself is yellow or orange you can find that effect intensified.

Spotlight and Shade

If you want to quiet a room, use uplighting or gallery lighting to accentuate specific items, especially fabrics. If the lamp light is too bright, mute it with lamp shades.  Use shades that complement your best loved knickknacks or pieces of art. Spotlight a beautiful plant, highlight a tapestry, or brighten the wall that holds those family photos.

Whatever lighting you choose, think of your lighting as an artistic medium through which you express the life of your home. The sense of welcome that your guests feel when they visit, and indeed that your family feels when they burst through the door, can be improved and intensified with good lighting.
