Fashionable Dog Collars

No longer does a dog collar have to be simply a functional piece of canine equipment designed to hold an ID tag and attach to a leash. Designer dog collars are all the rage, and our canine friends have never looked so good!

How do you make sure that the fancy red dog collar you’d like to purchase for Fido will fit? By taking a few simple steps:

1. Measure your dog’s neck. The easiest way to do this is to take a string, put it around your dog’s neck like a collar, mark it (or cut it) where it overlaps, and then stretch the string out next to a ruler.
2. Go online or to a pet store and find for a collar that lists a range of sizes that includes your dog’s. Consider not only fashion but also whether the collar will be too wide for your dog’s delicate neck (or conversely, too narrow, which can be uncomfortable for a dog when walking on leash).
3. Put the collar on the dog, adjusting the sizing so that you can slip two fingers between the collar and the dog’s neck.
4. Try to slide the collar over the dog’s head. If it comes off easily, like with the tug of a leash, make it a little smaller. You don’t want it slipping off if your dog puts on the brakes during a walk.

Keep checking on the collar every so often to make sure that your dog’s neck size hasn’t changed (weight lost or gained can have that effect) and that the collar hasn’t suffered any wear and tear. When it’s outgrown or damaged, you can start the process all over again. Enjoy collar shopping!
