Three Golf GPS Units You can Use Without a Subscription

Now that golf GPS units have become affordable, golfers have started finding that they can’t live without a GPS rangefinder.

Golf GPS rangefinders help speed up play, increase your course management skills and make the overall golf experience much more enjoyable.

Unfortunately, many golfers are surprised to find that even after spending hundreds of dollars on their new GPS rangefinder, they still have to pay a yearly subscription fee in order to use their device.

Fortunatley, there are several brands of golf GPS rangefinders that do not require a subscription. They are the Sonocaddie, the Golf Buddy and the OnPar golf GPS units.

There are places to find great reviews about these GPS devices, so I won’t go into too much detail here, but I do want to give you an idea of what each unit is like.

All three of these Golf GPS devices are top of the line, color GPS units. You may think you don’t need something so fancy, but once you use the color version, you won’t want to go back the the black and white. Trust me. Besides, by the time you pay the subscription prices for some of the higher end black and white units, the price is about the same.

The first unit (and my favorite) is the the Golf Buddy Tour. Here is a very good Golf Buddy Tour GPS review that also shows some of the best prices online. The Golf Buddy can hold 20,000 courses on the unit, which is the highest of any GPS unit. All Norht American golf courses are pre-loaded, so you don’t have to fiddle around with trying to download anything. The Golf Buddy Tour has automatic course and hole recognition. Just turn it on and you are set to go. The Golf Buddy Tour allows you to measure how far you hit your ball, keeps track of your scores and has a custom target capability. The unit is bright and easy to read, even in direct sun (a necessity in the desert), plus it is waterproof (essential for rainy climates). Overall, you can’t go wrong with the Golf Buddy Tour.

The second unit is the OnPar GPS unit. The OnPar is very cool because it has a touch screen just like an iPhone. This frees up the front of the unit from all buttons, so it is all a screen. The on-screen menu system is easy to follow and the touch screen is responsive. I recommend getting a screen guard for any GPS device you have, but it is essential for the OnPar, since you will be touching the screen a lot. For more details about the OnPar, read this OnPar GPS review . The features of the onPar ar similar to the Golf Buddy, but it only holds 300 courses in memory. That means you have to download all the courses you play and put them onto the device.

The final golf GPS device that does not require a subscription is the Sonocaddie. This is a very nice GPS device with all kinds of neat features. The Sonocaddie may have been my favorite, but ranks third for one reason only. Even though it does not require an annual subscription, the Sonocaddie does have a one-time membership fee to access the courses online. After that, you download whatever course you need to the unit. The Sonocaddie has a lot more detailed information that it stores, so it only holds 30 course on the unit. That shouldn’t be a problem for most golfers, but can be a hassle if you are an avid player who plays at a lot of different courses. See the review of the Sonocaddie GPS rangefinder for further details on all the features the Sonocaddie offers.

Golf GPS devices are here to stay, and even though many golf courses are integrating the devices into their carts, handheld golf GPS units are still a valuable tool. Many times you hit shots to areas ont he course that you can’t drive right up to. In those cases, the cart GPS isn’t helping you. A handheld GPS, however, will give you an exact yardage from wherever you are.

My advice is to get a Golf GPS unit right away. It will help lower your score and make golfing more fun. You’ll know exactly how far you hit the ball and willl be able to easily track your improvement. Whatever kind of GPS unit you get, my advice is to find one that doesn’t require an annual subscription to download courses.
